  Protectingthe Intangible Cultural Heritages

  保护非物质文化遗产

Liketangible cultural heritages such as the Great Wall and the Forbidden City, intangible cultural heritages like Peking Opera and Confucius-commemoratingrituals are equally crucial. We should make our utmost efforts to preserveintangible heritages because, without their physical form of existence, theyare in greater risk of extinction.

Accordingto UNESCO’s Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage(2003), all forms of social customs and habits, folklore, performing arts, rituals, oral traditions, festivals, traditional crafts and various knowledgeand practices about nature and universe can be classified as intangiblecultural heritages. As a country consisting of a great diversity of ethnicgroups and with time-honored history and civilization, China abounds inintangible cultural heritages. Cultural heritages connect modern people withthe historical past, allowing them to acquire a cultural and historicalidentity. Without cultural heritages, we would be rendered absolutely rootlessand we would find it hard to cope with challenges at present and in thefuture.

However, the modernization process poses mounting threats to intangible heritages. Manypeople have a blind faith in the latest electronic devices. It is also patheticto see elderly people in possession of such legacies pass away withouttransmitting them to the younger generation. Faced with those challenges, weshould both preserve and renovate our ancestral heritages so that we can helpcontribute to the cultural diversity of the world and return to our spiritualhomeland in this age of impersonal science and technology.

Todaywhen people talk about Red Cross Organization, they shake their heads and don’ttrust this organization. People react for it originated from about four yearsago, at that time, a girl showed off her luxury in the public media, she toldpeople that her father was a member of the Red Cross Organization. More andmore people knew her, they thought they were cheated by the organization, themoney they donated was not used in the right way. The incident has a greatnegative influence on the Red Cross Organization, people don’t trust it anymore, they are not willing to donate their money. As for me, I will not donatemoney to the organization, I choose to give money to the person who is in needof help, so the money won’t be taken by others, make sure the person get thereal money.

4论孩子们对电脑游戏上瘾On Children's Addicting to Computer Games

Ascomputers are available in our daily life, an increasing number of children areplaying computer games quite often. This phenomenon has absolutely causedpublic’s attention. People think that the cyber games like drugs which willmake children addicted into them. In my opinion, our parents, school andsociety should join hands to help youth to get rid of computer games.

Firstof all, parents should limit the time of children spending on computer games. As parents, they should pay attention to students’ playing time. As long asthey find their children spending too much time on playing cyber games, theyshould urge children to quit.

Second, school should cooperate with parents to keep an eye on students’ free time.School should contact often with parents and talk about the situation ofchildren so that they can better solve children’s playing game problems.

Thirdly, our society should not provide the under age students with computers to playgames. Many cybercafés will provide under age students computers to playinggames. So, for the sake of prohibit children to play games, our society shouldtake the responsibility to prohibit teenagers to go into the computer place.

Allin all, for the good of children, our parents, schoolsand society should make jointed effort to limit students to playing too many computergames.

  5网上购物 Shopping Online

Withthe development of information industry, there are more and more peopleshopping online. Shopping online means shopping on the Internet without goingout. Therefore, on the one hand, shopping online has its advantage. One theother hand, shopping on line also has its disadvantage.

Firstof all, shopping online is very convenient. People can buy thing only they havea computer, which can surf the Internet. They don’t need to go out on a rainyday or under the shining sun. Meanwhile, people can save their time to finishtheir work or other things. On the contrary, as people just decide what theybuy depending on the picture placed by the shop owner, they can’t see thequality before they receive the product. Sometimes people maybe buy the thingsare in low quality, or some fake products.

Ingeneral, shopping online has its advantage and disadvantage. In my opinion, Iprefer shopping online than shopping on the street.

6塑料袋收费并不是有效的环保方法 It is Not Effective to Charge for Plastic

Atpresent most supermarkets is pursuing the policy of charging for plastic bagsinstead of giving them free. This policy is carried out for controllingpollution since the pollution resulting from plastic bags has become a bigthreat to urban environment. Though daily use of free bags in the markets istremendous in number, I don't think consumers' paying for plastic bags can takeeffect in controlling pollution.

Tobegin with, it is unfair that only consumers should shoulder the responsibilityof environmental pollution caused by plastic bags, providing free plastic bagsto consumers is a marketing strategy adopted by supermarkets. Althoughsupermarkets have to pay for the plastic bags, consumers bring them far greatereconomic rewards in comparison to this minimal cost. From this point of view,it is the supermarkets that have gained the hidden profits through free bagswhile consumers only get shopping convenience they should have.

Inaddition, it is over-optimistic and bit simple-minded to contend that chargingfor plastic bags can help reduce pollution problem. My observation tells methat in most supermarkets plastic bags are offered by salespeople according tocustomers' actual needs. Since the need for shopping bags does exist, chargingfor those bags is not so effective. Besides not only the supermarkets providefree plastic bags, most the food markets and shops do. Therefore it isunrealistic to expect this policy to help reduce the pollution problem causedby plastic bags.

Inshort, it is not a wise policy to charge shopping bags. To protect theenvironment, people should take varied of effective measures.

7我看假冒伪劣商品 My View on Fake Commodities

Fakecommodities can be found, now and then, in the market, which has aroused a lotof public attention. It is reported that these commodities range fromfoodstuff, clothes to radios, and TV sets and even medicines. Fake commoditiesare harmful in many ways. To begin with, they bring about great loss in bothproperties and lives. For instance, if someone buys some fake medicines, it maynot cure him of his illness, on the contrary, it may probably make his illnessworse or even put an end to his life. Besides, fake commodities may impair theprofit of the manufactures who produce the real products by making theconsumers suspicious of these products, thus causing social problems. There aremany ways to get rid of fake commodities. First, laws should be enforced topunish those who produce these products. Second, people should be advised howto tell the genuine commodities from the fake ones. Moreover, people should notbuy things just because they are cheap and attractively advertised.Furthermore, they should be encouraged to report to the relevant authorities incase they have bought a fake commodity. In a word, if the whole society worktogether to solve this problem, I think fake commodities will have nowhere toexist.

  8关于火车票实名制Real-name Train Ticket

Withthe largest population in the world and an underdeveloped railway system,Chinais notorious for making train tickets particularly hard to purchase forordinary citizens, especially during the Spring Festival when the railway isthe primary means of transportation. As a result, ticket scalpers have proliferated, monopolizing a large quantity of tickets byeither hiring people to buy tickets or conspiring with the ticket sellerswithin the railway stations.

Asthe entire nation’s outrage over ticket scarcity keeps mounting, the Chinese government has introduced the drastic measure that citizenspurchase train tickets with valid personal IDs. The system is designedprimarily to crack down on ticket scalpers whose business has developed into amajor industry. By allowing each individual to buy only one ticket, the system seeks to make tickets accessible to people in real need, rather than controlled by a small number of profit-seeking and illegalscalpers.

However, this reformatory measure, while somewhat easing ticket scarcity, creates new problems. Buyers find the whole buying process troublesome andtime-consuming. When boarding the train, the passenger who forgetsto bring his valid ID certificate will be denied access to the train. I believethe introduction of each new system is coupled with shortcomings and there mustbe ways to improve the system as it is enforced. Of course,we look forward to the day when China’s railway networks are so sufficientlydeveloped that tickets are readily available to anyone at any time.

9电话不能取代书信 Phones Will Not Kill Letter Writing

withthe development of people’s life standard and the progress of technology, phones have been very common in our lives. Therefore, there are some peopleworrying that letter writing will be replaced by phones totally. In my opinion, phones will not kill letter writing completely.

Manyreasons can account for my views. First, compared with phones—a straight way toexpress feeling and to communicate, letter writing is more implicit. In otherwords, letter writing is an implicit way to deal with problem, especially in anembarrassing situation. For example, when we have quarrel with our friendssometimes, we can explain or apology to them by writing a letter. Second, letter writing is more sincere and formal than phones in expressing ourgratitude. Most of the well-educated are inclined to use letters to expresstheir respect and gratitude rather than other ways in that they can collectthese letters to commemorate their association or affection. I believe thatthey will keep this habit all the time. Finally, to some extent, letter writingis much cheaper than phone calls and the former is more suitable for the poor.

Therefore,I believe that letter writing will not be replaced by phones completely, and Ieven advocate that we should use letter writing to replace phones in somememorable situation.

  10为什么选秀节目如此受欢迎?Why Are Talent Shows Popular?

Overthe past couple of years, a variety of talent shows have emerged on TV channelsacross the nation, from Super Girls to Happy Boys and so forth. This type ofentertainment program is intensely popular, especially among young adults andhas produced profound impacts on their studies and life. -

Thereare a couple of reasons behind the tide. To start with, young folks need rolemodels to learn from. So many of them are crazy for contestants participatingin these programs. This gives rise to the increasing emergence of these showsbecause TV networks naturally need to cater to young audiences. Plus, thanks toeconomic and political reforms carried out by the government, this crop ofyoung generation have more freedom and desire to express and showcasethemselves. Therefore, a growing number of young people desire to get involvedin these shows.

Thisis a divisive topic. On my personal level, the talent show is a superb means ofrelaxing and amusing and can hugely relieve our strains. As college students, however, we could not afford to indulge in them and should be aware of theutmost importance of studies.-

  11水资源问题Water Resources Problems

Lifeon earth depends on water, and there is no substitute for it. The currentassumption is that our basic needs for water-whether for drinking, agriculture, industry or the raising of fish--will always have to be met. Given thatpremise, there are two basic routes we can go. more equitable access to wateror more drastic engineering solutions.

Lookingat the engineering solution first, a lot of my research concentrates on whathappens to wetlands when you build dams in river basins, particularly in Africa. The ecology of such areas is almost entirely driven by the seasonal change ofthe river--the pulse of the water. And the fact is that if you build a dam, yougenerally wreck the downstream ecology. In the past, such problems have beenhidden by a lack of information. But in the next century, governments will haveno excuse for their blissful ignorance.

Theengineers ability to control water flows has created new kinds ofunpredictability too. 'Dams in Africa have meant fewer fish, less grazing andless floodplain agriculture--none of which were anticipated. And their averageeconomic life is assumed to be thirty years. Dams don't exist for ever, butwhat will replace them is not clear.

Thekey issue in any discussion of water is money. To talk about a water crisishides intractable problems such as poverty.

Considerthe problems of water supply in Mexico City or Delhi. If you' re rich, youdrink mineral water and may even have a swimming-pool--yet millions in suchcities can't get safe drinking water. People talk about the coming watercrisis. I believe we have one now. It is a water crisis for the poor.

12我应该要感谢谁呢? To Whom Should I Pay My Thankfulness?

Iwoke up in this clear, early winter morning and was attracted by the sceneryoutside my window. Everything was embraced by the heavy mist; the rays of therising sun and the serene heaven were dissolved into the lavender mist, looming. The faint fragrance of dewdrops hanging on the bare twigs tempted meinto contemplation.

Mycontemplation was about the question: to whom my thankfulness should pay onThanksgiving Day.

Initially,I would thank my parents. It is the parents who give me life and have played anunsubordinated role of the process of our language learning and walking. Theyused their warm palms to receive me to come into this world; the very moment Iopened my eyes, their wide smiles were greeting me. They whispered the firstword into my ears, softly; they held my hands to lead me to tread my firststep, firmly. Although the ability of learning language was innate, parentstaught me how to speak and communicate; although my legs were inborn, parentsassisted me to stand uprightly and walk like a human. I have been appreciatingto my parents, for they lift my sorrow with their shoulders notwithstandingtheir own pressure.

Then,I would like to thank my experience, especially the bitter part of my life. Iwould thank the misery during my growing process, for it has taught me totreasure the limited happy moment; I would thank the loneliness due to thestrong will and uncommon patience it has given me.

Finally, the no less gratitude should be given to my friends, classmates, and peers. Iwould thank those people who are more excellent than me, for the simple reasonthat they set the example and goal for me to surpass; simultaneously, I wouldpay my thankfulness to those who fall behind me because of the confidence whichI gain from my exceeding position. Definitely, I also thank the people whonever fail to treat me kind and smile at me. Through them, I have beenencouraged and have seen the characteristic of humans’ softness.

Nightbegan to fall; the daylight was fading inches by inches. However, theappreciation I mentioned above would lie in my deepest mind, never fade.
